A mother was attacked as she was driving with her baby in her car on the motorway.

The 34-year-old woman suffered a head injury during the assault on the M9 northbound.

Police Scotland said a man carried out the attack in her car as she drove at speed between the Forth Road Bridge junction and junction three.

The victim had her four-month-old baby in her blue Citreon C1 at the time of the assault, while the attacker left the car after she had pulled over at around 12.40am on Tuesday.

Officers said they are following a "positive line of inquiry" and are seeking to speak to two men who stopped their car to help the woman.

Police sergeant Stuart McKissock said: "Thankfully the woman only sustained a minor head injury and was able to leave the area.

"Nevertheless we are eager to trace the two male witnesses who came to the aid of the female driver.

"I would urge anyone who was on the M9 and saw the incident, or knows who the two witnesses may be, to come forward and contact us immediately."

Anyone with information is asked to call the police on 101.
