Cop charged with illegal possession of gun and bullets

An Embu policeman who had deserted duty was yesterday charged with possessing an illegal gun and 11 bullets.

The weapon does not belong to Kenya Police Service.

Police Constable Nyasetia Alphonsious appeared before resident magistrate Jean Ndeng’eri .

He is accused of having a Phantom Ceska pistol registration number OB16712 without a licence on October 10.

Nyasetia is also charged of being found with the bullets without a valid certificate.

He denied the charges, saying he is an officer and he is licenced to carry a firearm.

Nyasetia said although the gun was not assigned to him, he has the constitutional right to acquire one through laid down procedures ,which he did after he felt his live was under threat.

He was released on 800,000 bond. The case will be mentioned on November 1 and the hearing is on December 8.
