NORTH CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC) - The 17-year-old fatally shot in North Charleston on Wednesday night has been identified, hours after two teens were arrested in connection with the shooting.

Amarai Roper Smalls, 17, was shot and pronounced dead at the scene on the 2600 block of Ranger Drive, according to Charleston County Dep. Coroner Sheila Williams. Authorities responded Wednesday night shortly before 9 p.m. to a report a body had been found.

A 15-year-old has been arrested and is being lodged at the Department of Juvenile Justice, according to North Charleston Police spokesman Spencer Pryor. The teen's identity has not been released because of his age.

A second teen, 17-year-old Demonte Wallace, of North Charleston, has been arrested and charged with accessory before the fact of murder, Pryor said.

Investigators were seen Wednesday night placing crime scene tape around a house were Smalls's body was discovered.

"He was laying there, wasn't moving he was slumped over on the side of the fence," said Cyrus Cadmon, who lives near where the body was found.

He said it looked like the man had a few gunshot wounds and had been there for a few hours.

Wallace is being held at the Cannon Detention Center pending a bond hearing Friday morning, Pryor said.
