A hard-hitting water safety warning has been installed at Aberdeen beach near where a mother and her six-year-old son lost their lives.

Lucas and Julie Walker died after getting into difficulty at the beach on August 20 and a review of safety measures there is now under way.

The RNLI said the display, which is part of its Respect the Water campaign, has not been installed in direct response to their deaths.

It said it is intended to demonstrate the weight of a tonne of water and the threat it can pose to swimmers.

A total of 39 people lost their lives off Scotland's coast last year and the vast majority did not intend to get into the water, according to the RNLI.

Launching Respect the Water earlier this year, the charity said: "Our campaign is targeted at the individuals who are heading to the coast and can take more personal responsibility for their own safety.

"They should find out about the hazards, know what to do should they get into difficulty, and know what to do should they see someone else in danger."
