London once again dominates the annual list of the world's greatest bars, with five bars making it into the top ten and another four featuring elsewhere on the list.

Two hotel bars – the American Bar at The Savoy and the Dandelyan at the Mondrian Hotel – claimed the second and third spots respectively, just missing out on the top spot to New York's Dead Rabbit Grocery & Grog.

Climbing one spot from last year's list, The Connaught hotel's bar was awarded fourth place, while new entry The Gibson came in at sixth and Hoxton's speakeasy style cocktail bar, Happiness Forgets, rounded off the top ten.

Other London bars to make the list were Nightjar (19th), Bar Termini (30th), Oriole (32nd) and the Lewis Carroll-themed Callooh Callay (48th) in Shoreditch.

Following the departure of its head bartender Alex Kratena in 2015, last years winner, the Artesian at The Langham hotel, did not make the list for the first time in four years.

The awards are the result of a worldwide industry survey produced by Drinks International magazine. Over 400 of the most well-known names in the drinks industry were polled, including former head bartender at the Savoy Hotel, Peter Dorelli, Australian Bartender of the Year, Charlie Ainsbury, and former Bartender of the Year, Tim Phillips.

After London, New York had the second greatest number of bars on the list with secret speakeasy Attaboy, cocktail bar Employees Only and the NoMad at the NoMad Hotel all making it into the top ten.

The only city outside London or New York to have a top ten rated bar was Athens with The Clumsies, an all day bar in the heart of the city, coming in ninth place.

A list of the '2016 Bars to Watch' was also released, featuring the bars around the world that have piqued the attention but missed out on making the official list.

Lost Lake, a tiki bar in Chicago, narrowly missed out on making the top 50 list, with the judges describing it as "a leader of the genre".

London's Artesian was also included in the watch list – a dramatic drop from 2015, when it topped the main list: "With a dozen staff leaving after last year's top-spot finish, Artesian's fall from grace prove it's the team, not the four walls, that make for excellence in hospitality," said the survey.
