This past month, my family received some devastating news: my sister, Annika Jersild, was diagnosed with stage four colon cancer. The cancer had spread to her liver, and she had surgery immediately to remove tumors in her colon and liver.
My brilliant sister Annika is only 24-years-old and is a math major from William and Mary. She worked with NASA Langley, Pyramid Systems, and CEI before deciding to complete her Master of Forest Resources and Environmental Conservation at Virginia Tech in ecological mathematical modeling. Just recently, she moved to Atlanta, Georgia with her long-term boyfriend Stephen to complete her Ph.D. in Earth and Atmospheric Sciences at Georgia Tech, working with climate modeling. Annika loves to play guitar, bake, read, travel, and spend time with friends and family.
Annika will now be completing six months to a year of chemotherapy at Emory hospital in Atlanta while continuing on with her Ph.D. (she's a fighter!) Because Annika is so young, she is a very rare case for colon cancer. The chemotherapy she must partake in often makes one infertile - and Annika would someday love to have a baby of her own. Unfortunately, freezing one's eggs doesn't fall under health insurance, and the procedure can be tremendously expensive. We have been applying for grants to assist with this, but unfortunately, not everything will be covered.
The money we receive would go to extensive copays and hospital bills, travel costs associated with her illness, and the additional costs associated with her recovery and chemotherapy. We appreciate every dollar donated and any words of love and support. If you cannot donate now, your thoughts and prayers are enormously valued and felt! We have no doubt in our minds that Annika will beat this disease! We will be forever in gratitude to any help for my silly, sweet, smart, and wonderful sister.
