Agent Carter may sadly be off our screens, though star Hayley Atwell has revealed that a TV special may have happened had it not been given the axe.

Talking about the show's cancellation earlier this year, the actress said she was still attached to the character – and she's still hoping for a return in the future.

"I think they would have figured something out in terms of making a special, or waiting until we finish this season, and then we do something else with another network, perhaps," she told CBR.com.

"All I'm saying with that is, it's still a much-loved show for the people involved in the making of it, and we know that the fans, it has a special place in their hearts.

"I would be very happy to go back to her if she became available."

Asked whether a special was still possible, Atwell said: "I would love it to be. I hound [Marvel Studios co-president Louis] D'Esposito on a regular basis, saying, 'Give me a movie!'

"I think the great thing about Peggy is, we know from Winter Soldier that she lives a long life, so she can come back. I'm banking on, when I'm in my fifties, I'm like, 'This is the time. Let's see what Peggy's up to in this decade'."

Is Marvel's Agent Carter actually finished for good?

The ABC show was axed after just two seasons, and since Atwell has expressed interest in playing Peggy Carter on another network. Her co-star Dominic Cooper has also urged Amazon to pick it up, while Netflix have ruled themselves out of reviving the show.

However, as much as we would like to see Peggy again, Marvel's Jeph Loeb said it's not as simple as just getting it back on TV, with networks making the call to Marvel.
