Pumpkin train, Dells Fall Festival and more

The Mid-Continent Railway Museum in North Freedom offers fall train rides each year, drawing an estimated 1,000 people each weekend.

Green Bay: NEW Zoo Boo. Halloween decorations and attractions fill the NEW Zoo for this special event on Friday and Saturday. Kids 12 and under are encouraged to come in costume for trick-or-treating and to enjoy inflatables, a maze, a horse-drawn haunted wagon ride and more. The event runs from 3 to 8 p.m. both days as well as Oct. 21-22 and Oct. 28-29. Tickets are $8 in advance and $10 at the gate. See newzoo.org.

Green Lake: Oktoberfest. The Heidel House celebrates this annual German event with traditional food, beer and music from 2 to 10 p.m. Saturday. Other activities include a polka dancing competition and the Das Boot Relay. Visitors are encouraged to wear traditional German garb, with the "best dressed" crowned at the end of the night. Admission is free. See heidelhouse.com.

Mischicot: Pumpkin Fest. Fall's favorite squash is the star of this festival in downtown Mishicot from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday. Activities include wagon rides, arts and crafts, kids games, pumpkin bowling, a parade, and plenty of pumpkin treats including pumpkin beer and pumpkin pancakes. North Freedom: Mid-Continent Railway Pumpkin Special. Take a train ride through the changing leaves in southcentral Wisconsin to pick up a pumpkin from a patch along Quartzite Lake Saturday and next Sunday. Four trains make the 7-mile round-trip each day. Coach tickets are $20 for adults, $18 for seniors (62 and older), $15 for students ages 13-17, $10 for kids ages 3-12 and free for those 2 and under. Sister Bay: Fall Fest. Downtown Sister Bay goes full fall mode during this festival Friday through next Sunday. Enjoy an arts and crafts fair, a parade, children's activities, a classic car show, food and drinks, and live music. See cometosisterbay.com.

Wisconsin Dells: Fall Festival Weekend. There's something for everyone at this festival in the Dells Friday and Saturday. Beer lovers will want to check out the Dells on Tap beer tasting event, fit folks will enjoy the 5K run and walk, and kids will love the pony rides, petting zoo, face painting and live entertainment. Illinois: Open House Chicago. Get a look inside more than 200 buildings across Chicago during this free event Saturday and next Sunday. Sites include private clubs, hotels, theaters, schools and places of worship. Most are open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. both days. See openhousechicago.org.

Michigan: Fresh Coast Film Fest. See documentaries that celebrate life outdoors at this inaugural film festival Thursday through next Sunday in Marquette. More than 50 films will be screened, ranging from surfing in Iceland to ice climbing in Michigan, and filmmakers will be present at more than half of the films. Weekend passes are $60, day passes are $35. See freshcoastfilm.com.
