Why You Should Never Say "Sorry" to House Guests

When inviting people into our homes, it can be easy to view everything with super-critical eyes. It’s natural to want to apologize for these supposed shortcomings, but the word “sorry” should never escape your lips.

As Jennifer Hunter of Apartment Therapy points out, your home is yours, and apologizing for the temperature, the throw pillows, or the dog distracts your guests from all of the awesome things that make it uniquely yours. She says:

Sorry about the mess.” “Sorry it’s so hot in here.” “Sorry, we’re out of milk.” Sound familiar?

Listen up, your home is

yours

to do with as you please. Not only is there no need to apologize for the state of your space, but doing so will only cause people to notice the very thing you just pointed out!

Picture this: you’re walking into a friend’s home for the first time and, just as you begin to admire her perfect wall color or her great armoire, she says, “Sorry about all those dishes in the sink.” What’s the very next thing you’re gonna look at? Those dirty dishes!

After all, your friends and family are most likely thrilled that you invited them into your house, and don’t give a damn about a few dirty dishes or a basket of laundry, even if it makes you feel like Gayle Waters-Waters.
