NATIONAL HOCKEY LEAGUE UNVEILS 2017 NHL CENTENNIAL CLASSIC™

First-Ever NHL Centennial Classic™ Outdoor Game to Launch 2017 NHL Centennial Celebrations.

The National Hockey League (NHL®) today unveiled the 2017 NHL Centennial Classic™ logo. The January 1 outdoor game – the first-ever NHL Centennial Classic™ – will feature an Original Six™ match-up when the Toronto Maple Leafs face-off against the Detroit Red Wings at BMO Field in Toronto, Ont.

A prominent element of the new logo is the incorporation of the CN Tower – a defining characteristic of the Toronto skyline. A crown jewel in the city of Toronto, the world’s tallest free-standing structure in the Western Hemisphere is also one of the Seven Wonders of the Modern World.

The NHL Centennial Classic™ logo also features a black and silver colour scheme, inspired by the NHL Shield. Centennial silver is a fresh take, integrating angular highlights that mimic the upward angle of the NHL® ligature in the Shield.  The ‘100’ is depicted in a clean bold typeface that is celebratory but progressive and modern, fitting the cutting-edge nature of the game. The inclusion of the 1917-2017 ribbon – a continuation of the ribbon within the 2017 NHL Centennial Classic™ logo – unites our rich history to our future.

“As the first event in our celebration of 100 years of NHL hockey, the NHL Centennial Classic™ logo had to serve as a symbol of the host city, two iconic teams and an incredible milestone,” said NHL Chief Marketing Officer and EVP Brian Jennings. “We hope the NHL Centennial Classic™ will evoke memories of the Toronto Maple Leaf and Detroit Red Wings rivalry and inspire 100 more years of NHL hockey.”

Additional details surrounding the 2017 NHL Centennial Classic™ – including broadcast and ticketing information and other events surrounding the game – will be announced in the coming months.
