Xavier Dolan’s “It’s Only the End of the World” (“Juste la fin du monde”) will represent Canada in the foreign-language race at the upcoming 89th Annual Academy Awards.

Entertainment One, Sons of Manual, and MK2 made the announcement on Friday.

“Xavier is a truly standout filmmaker whose work resonates with audiences around the world, across languages and borders,” said Anick Poirier, Seville International’s senior vice president of sales. “Together with our partners, we could not be more excited to be on this journey with him and this captivating film.”

The film made its world premiere at the Cannes Film Festival in May, where it took home the prestigious Grand Prix. “It’s Only the End of the World” is an adaptation of the play of the same name by Jean-Luc Lagarce, and tells the story of a young author who, after 12 years of absence, returns to his native village to tell his family about his imminent death.

“It’s Only the End of the World” stars Marion Cotillard, Vincent Cassel, Léa Seydoux, Nathalie Baye, and Gaspard Ulliel. The film is a Canada-France co-production, produced by Montreal-born Dolan, Nancy Grant, Sylvain Corbeil, and Nathanaël Karmitz.
