Everyone seems to be talking about leadership these days. So, what is leadership really? The definition according to Wikipedia is: Leadership is both a research area and a practical skill encompassing the ability of an individual or organization to "lead" or guide other individuals, teams, or entire organizations.

I'd like to talk about some misconceptions out there about leadership:

Misconception #1 - the belief that you have to be born a leader. The reality is that although there are certainly people who seem to be naturals at it and born with leadership traits - it is also very possible to learn to be an effective or even a great leader.

Misconception #2
- Only executives such as CEO's and high-level managers are required to be strong leaders. The truth is, everyone can benefit from developing leadership skills. Skills such as; how to work well with others, how to communicate effectively, how to be innovative and how and when to take risks; will enable you to reach both your personal and professional goals.

The best leaders are those who lead by example and inspire their team. They're willing and actually do what they expect of others.

"The most powerful leadership tool you have is your own example." - John Wooden

Working alongside of their teammates, strong leaders take the time to learn what unique value and skills they possess and create opportunities for them to utilize those skills in the best way possible. This allows the team member to not only enjoy and be fulfilled in the work that they're doing but, it will also result in making the biggest impact for the company.

A great leader is open to new ideas and opportunities. They have a very clear vision of where they, their team and the company are going and aren't easily swayed. They delight in the creativity of those around them and welcome good ideas that support the vision. They also provide opportunities for their team members to shine by delegating responsibilities and tasks to them. They trust their team members to use their expertise and their skills to successfully get the job done.

"If your actions inspire others to dream more, learn more, do more and become more, you are a leader." - John Quincy Adams

By motivating and empowering them they help others accomplish more than they ever thought possible.

The payoffs of leading this way are huge and the great news is that anyone can do it. Try adopting these tactics a week at a time and build from there. Then watch your leadership skills soar and your team and company thrive.

"Leaders become great, not because of their power, but because of their ability to empower others." - John Maxwell
