Thousands of ultra-Orthodox Jewish women have been sent an official reminder that it is “truly loathsome” to wear bright colours, fitted blouses or short skirts under the community’s strict dress code.

The letter was written by a senior rabbi and scholar of Jewish modesty laws and sent to 5,000 homes in Stamford Hill, north London, which has a large Charedi Jewish community.

The Union of Orthodox Hebrew Congregations, which commissioned the letter to go out with The Heimishe Newsheet, a local newsletter, said it was common to issue a reiteration of Jewish law in the month of Elul, which leads up to Rosh Hashanah, the Jewish new year, and Yom Kippur, which both fall in early October.
