Talking Faith | A fresh look at giving

A small gift went to help Zedrick from the Philippines.

I have to admit I struggle with giving.

I'm not sure why.

I guess it's a little selfish. It's something I felt bad about, but not bad enough to do anything different.

And that's not a good thing.

As Christians, giving is a really good thing. We're called not to be selfish, not only with our money, but also with our time.

We're called to be wise stewards and make good decisions with what we have.

But more important than who gives the most is our attitude while doing it.

It's a sign of what really is important to us.

Matthew 6:21 says "For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also."

It's a lesson I learned firsthand last week in Columbus.

I was at a concert when the lead singer talked about the band's work with CURE, an organization that helps provide needed surgeries for those in need in foreign countries.

I walked back to the table to check out the organization.

I didn't have much money, but was impressed by what the group was doing.

I gave $1. I didn't have much cash in my pocket, but felt the urge to help out — even in a small way.

It has been an encouragement to me.

Shortly after the concert, I received an email saying the group used my donation to help Zedrick, a 7-year-old boy from the Philippines  who was undergoing club foot surgery. It immediately struck a chord with me because my daughter also received the same surgery.

Even through my donation wasn't big, it was encouraging to be able to help. I also was able to email best wishes to Zedrick as he recovered from the surgery.

The lesson I learned from the past week is how the power of giving can help others — and ourselves.

Yes, I know $1 is little, but the experience has softened my heart to helping others.

Even if you don't have much to give or don't have a lot of extra time, start small.

The experience might change your life. I'm praying it will continue to change mine.
