Oracle Solaris and its OpenStack Offering

Users of Oracle Solaris can expect enterprise quality when they use OpenStack.

Oracle Solaris is the most advanced operating system for businesses. It is innately secure, fast and simple to use for DevOps and cloud deployments.

Oracle Solaris gives users the most efficient virtualization in the cloud without performance loss, making it the most scalable virtualization without the need of any additional hardware. What’s more, it can provide you with Oracle Solaris ZFS, which is a file system that gives you better compression, encryption and replication. Storage requirements using ZFS is 10 times less than traditional file systems.

Moreover, Oracle Solaris allows you to build a virtual network using SDN or software defined networking. It also helps build services that help meet your SLA and even give you the capacity to virtualize your network topologies without the need for additional software.

Oracle Solaris is also very secure, helping you achieve compliance significantly faster because of the included security features. That means Oracle Solaris can help you prevent or get rid of threats and malware. You can also lock down your VMs to get added protection, or sandbox users, virtual machines, or application.

OpenStack

One of the most important features of Oracle Solaris is that it has OpenStack. Users of Oracle Solaris can expect enterprise quality when they use OpenStack. Plus, they get a complete OpenStack distribution for x86 and SPARC. With Solaris, installing OpenStack is easy and all upgrades are seamless.

Glynn Foster, principal product manager of Oracle Solaris, says that the company is wholeheartedly โ€œcommitted to OpenStack.โ€ Indeed, Oracle has two software products that offer OpenStack. One is Oracle Solaris and the other Oracle Linux. Both of these offerings have complete distributions of OpenStack โ€“ with driver integrations.

Foster adds that having OpenStack in Oracle Solaris makes it easier for both existing and new Solaris users. OpenStack makes it possible from different technologies, providers, and vendors to work together because of the standardized infrastructure layer. OpenStack is also immensely attractive to developers, which is what makes it more invaluable to users.

Foster also points out that Oracle has been investing in containers such as its Oracle Solaris Zones, and that they are a proud participant of the Open Container Initiative project. And in continuing this commitment to container technologies, Oracle Solaris now has Docker integration. Having Docker in Oracle Solaris gives users more combined benefits. Theyโ€™ll enjoy top-notch enterprise level security, analytics, resource management and reliability provided by Oracle Solaris while also being able to take advantage of the ease and speed of deployment when you use Docker.

More than these, Foster also reveals that exciting things are in store for Oracle Solaris. The company has been working on its Software in Silicon strategy, which simply adds application features onto their SPAC processor. That allows you to block out illegal access. The launch of the Sonoma chip will see the same strategy in action for lower cost platforms and is just perfect for horizontal scale cloud deployments. Combine the Sonoma chip, the Software in Silicon strategy and Oracle Solaris, you get a cloud environment that is secure, fully integrated, and reliable at a cost that you will love.
