One would expect ultra-chic shoe trends to evolve out of Paris Fashion Week this season, right? Wrong. The last city of fashion month offered a bevy of unlikely, forward-thinking trends that moved luxury labels toward more experimentation.

Overall, there was a real emphasis on new shoe shapes. Designers played with pointy toes and severe angles, as well as softer ruffles. Clunky platforms — a major trend from New York Fashion Week as well — dominated.

The burgeoning athleisure trend also had a strong influence this season, with classic houses such as Hermès introducing sportier sneaker styles with Flyknit-like detailing.

Below are the Top 5 show trends from Paris:

1. Get Comfortable
It’s time to get cozy. Birkenstock-style sandals at Roger Vivier combined elegance with comfort. Woven sneakers at Hermès offered a luxe on-the-go option. Dries Van Noten elevated the flip-flop with crystal embroidery.

2. Un Peu Bizarre
Designers got wacky with exaggerated footwear finishes: Spandex thigh-highs at Balenciaga, rainbow soles at Manish Arora, mismatched shoe styling at Celine.

3. Frill Factor
Feminine is in with frills, bows and sparkle. There were bowed, strappy sandals at Giambattista Valli, frilled sandals at Isabel Marant and lace socks at Veronique Branquinho.

4. Clunk Craze
Get ready to build up your ankle strength. Bulky platforms, some finished with lug soles, were seen at Sonia Rykiel, Sacai and Fenty x Puma.

5. All Angles
Sharp angles and pointy toes add instant modernity. There were pointy stilettos at Saint Laurent and Stella McCartney, as well as curved heels at Acne Studios.
