Meet 9 Women Leading The Pack In Data Analytics

This article is more than 7 years old.

Any all-male tech event is likely to draw public notice these days. Yet conference organizers still seem surprised and offended when the issue is raised.

A colleague of mine, who happens to be a man, is fond of Twitter -shaming analytics technology events that don’t include women. He’s led many conferences himself, and never seems to have any trouble coming up with a slate of speakers that includes a significant number of women. He knows, firsthand, what’s reasonable, and what’s not. So he calls out the photos of all male panels and the speaking rosters that include no women, or very few.

He’s not the first or the only person to do this. I have to wonder why the organizers of these events don’t anticipate the negative reaction they’re going to get. This seems particularly remarkable in my own specialty of analytics, since so many practitioners are women.

Last week, he pointed out a couple of events with no women, or only one women, among many men. I sent the conference organizers a link to a resource that I created last year, profiles of 262 analytics book authors who happen to be women. What better speakers than the women who literally wrote the books on the topic? And I had conveniently provided succinct profiles with links to further information on each of them.

They never responded to me (the woman), but they did write to my colleague (the man) and invite him to suggest speakers.

It’s not always like that. Slideshare tells me that more than 5000 people have viewed my booklet on female analytics book authors. All told, I’ve profiled about 425 accomplished women in analytics, and my LinkedIn posts about them have drawn around 17,000 views to date. Now and then, I even hear from a conference organizer or editor who is using the profiles to scout for talent.

If you’re planning a conference, looking for a consultant or new employee, I hope that you, too, will use these profiles as a resource. They include only a tiny fraction of the many women in analytics, so let these build awareness of all the talented women you may overlooked in the past.
