When it comes to hacks, all hail Creatures of the Wind. We all have that one blush that was either too bright, too pink, or just not right for our skin tone, whether it lives in our vanities, the bottom of our drawers, or the Caboodle cases we took to college (just me?). It just sits there collecting dust under that unused eyelash glue (or lack thereof). We get it—it’s hard parting with compacts no matter how unloved. However, while backstage at the Creatures of the Wind spring/summer 2017 show, we learned how to temper our once-unused shades.
Lead makeup artist Mark Carrasquillo first applied Nars Velvet Matte Lip Pencil in Dragon Girl ($26, narscosmetics.com), a matte-but-ruby-red, richly pigmented hue, and then turned to a fuchsia blush (one that resembles something at the bottom of my own Caboodle). He dipped a fluffy eye-shadow brush into the blush and dabbed it over the red base he'd applied to the lips. “[Dragon Girl] is like a really strong red, but I’m [amping it up] with fuchsia powder to make a really strong matte, to make the color a little sicker, a little more rock and roll, and more like PJ Harvey" (his inspiration for the look), he told Allure. “[Now] it has some oomph to it. I mean, Dragon Girl is a red [shade] that every single girl that I know wears, so I just wanted to play with that idea and give it a twist,” Carrasquillo said.
This color-changing and old-blush-compact-saving trick has another hack use up its sleeve: You can brush it on top of lipstick to help extend the lippie's life span. “It won't move,” Carrasquillo told Allure while we were backstage at the Creatures of the Wind show.
One product with three new uses? Now that's some beauty knowledge dropped.
