Falling Into Autumn with Comforting Stories

Autumn is one of our favourite times of year.  We love the exciting possibilities that come with a new class of students and the stories that they will tell. This Autumn that will be back at BCIT again with our online course BCST 1073: Building and Engaging Digital Communities. We love the prospect of new projects with clients that get us exploring and building different storyworlds.  Of course, we also always love snuggling up as the days get chillier with a good story, both those that we craft and those created by others.

If you'd like to meet the percheron horses above, you can find them at Burnaby's Civic Square ~ Evangeline and Bay Bébé, Burnaby's newest residents!

Eye Spy Erica: Can you spot a much younger version of Erica in the photo above?

Read on below as we share a few of the things that we have been enjoying from others and that we ourselves are up to. You will also find a few of the tools that help us find work/life balance and that make our storytelling more creative, as well as our StoryToGo September Canadian Media and Marketing Job Board.

Guide to Paralympic Coverage

While we enjoyed the Olympic Games, we get even more excited by the Super Human feats of the Paralympic Games, and are pleased, thanks to digital streaming and mobile apps that we can now watch more of them than ever before.

Lori put together a guide on Roamancing of where to watch the Rio 2016 Paralympic Games.  You can tune in here: How to Live Stream and Watch the Rio 2016 Paralympics

Back to School Apps

Over the past few years, with teenage kids, Lori has begun to discover a number of great mobile apps that her kids use in their studies, as well as apps that make her job as a working mom easier. Here are a couple that she has reviewed:
Also, as there is nothing healthier for the mind than a good exercise break, here is an app that Lori is using to remind her to get in her daily workout: Nike Training: A Workout App to Keep You Active on the Road

Photo Storytelling Tip: Creating Artsy Images

If you have been in awe of all your friends newly discovered artistic talents in their incredible works of art that they've been sharing online these past few months, I'll let you in on a little secret ... chances are, they are using the app, Prisma, on their photographs. This app provides filters for your photographs that transform them into works of art.

For a glimpse at the possibilities, Emme transformed one of Lori's images from Alouette Lake into several different works of art with Prisma:

Roamancing with Alex Charters

We love when our team of storytellers grows and we can share a new voice with new experiences and perspectives in our mix of eclectic characters. This year has welcomed Alex Charters to our crew of Roamancers.  Alex has been sharing her adventures in Europe, as a Canadian student studying in Germany. Here are a few of her recent posts:

Back to School at BCIT

If you are nostalgically wishing that you too were going back to school this Autumn, it is not too late.

Erica is pleased to be teaching Building and Engaging Digital Communities (BCST 1073) again this term at BCIT. This post-secondary accredited course is open to the public for Professional Development, and is online, so that you can design it to fit your schedule each week.

Content covered in this course includes utilizing WordPress to build a professional website, optimizing the SEO to that website and an accompanying YouTube Channel, niche audience building, creation of and participation in a digital storytelling campaign, measuring social metrics, crowdfunding, crafting appealing email newsletters, and developing a long term strategy for continued community engagement.

We hope to see you in class this Autumn!

From the Pages of Reel West

How time flies! This Autumn marks two years since Erica started her Digitally Yours column in Reel West Magazine.

Here are some past reads from the column for you to enjoy:
Stay tuned this Autumn for Erica's latest column with her thoughts on Snapchat applications for web series, TV series and films.

Pokemon Parenting

With school back in session, even if you managed to side step the Pokemon Go Craze with your kids, chances are, they will start playing with friends from school. Banning Pokemon Go for your kids' safety, from our experience, isn't all that effective a solution. For this reason, we recommend treating it like sex ed and having a healthy conversation with your kids on how to have fun, while staying safe. Read on with Pokemon Go: Teaching Your Kids to Use Pokemon Go Safely.

Congratulation Steve!

If you read Erica's Digitally Yours Column or follow along with our social media feeds, you will know that we are big fans of Steve Dotto and his tech web series, Dotto Tech. Steve is a wonderful friend, and we are so appreciative that as he has been discovering how to transition from a traditional broadcast TV and radio series to a web based series, and turn his web based series into a viable business, he has been sharing his journey with us.

We really value Steve's advice and as such, we can't think of a more deserving content creator and now YouTube star to be featured in Forbes Magazine's
20 Must Watch YouTube Channels That Will Change Your Business! Be sure to tune into Dotto Tech on YouTube.

A shout out of thanks to Amanda Nidelian, our newest and youngest (aside from any of our nieces, nephews, sons or daughters) storyteller, who edited Erica's awkward dance moves together. We love what she's done with this.

Wishing you much fun and many such dances of your own this Autumn!
