The Sunday morning of New York fashion week means one thing: Victoria Beckham. It's well worth the 6.30am wake-up alarm to bustle our way backstage at the show that never disappoints on the beauty front. And how could it, when Victoria calls on the best in the business—backstage legends Guido and Pat McGrath—to create the hair and make-up looks? Here are 6 things we're taking away from backstage at Victoria Beckham's SS17 show (and yes, one is food related).

1. Two is the magic number

Master hairstylist, Guido called the look 'high maintenance simplicity,' which equated to super sleek, healthy, rich looking hair with a straight precision parting. The great news? He only used two styling products – two! A backstage rarity when we're used to being engulfed in clouds of multiple sprays and powders.

Once washed, Guido applied Redken Pillow Proof onto damp hair to 'prep the hair and cut down the drying time' and followed with Redken Satin Wear to create a 'super glossy finish.' We'll take one of each please.

2. To go super sleek you need great tools

'The mood of the entire look is sleek simplicity,' Guido told us, 'and for this, heated tools are absolutely key.' But not just any old tools he added; 'When you're using heat on your hair, you need to invest in great implements – they'll not only make your life easier, but they're also reliable.' Firstly, he blow-dried the hair sleek using a bristle brush and GHD Air Hairdryer, before running over the hair root to tip with GHD Platinum Stylers.

3. Make-up brushes are out for SS17

What Pat says goes. So we're chucking all our make-up brushes in the bin (not really, but for want of dramatic effect) and opting for our fingers instead. For all three of the make-up looks Pat created – one super simple and clean, one emerald eyeliner flick and a final cobalt blue eye – she forwent brushes in favour of a 'freeform technique' using just fingers.

4. But blue and green are most definitely in

Last season, Victoria launched a lip debate between red and nude (the two lipstick shades chosen for the show) and SS17 see's two other colours take the limelight: emerald and cobalt blue. 'I knew I really wanted a proper look for this season and I wanted to do something new and fresh,' Victoria told us when we were chatting after the show. ' I'd never done a strong eye before and these are just colours that I love – that's why I put them in my palette'. The palette in question being the incredible one Victoria created for her collection with Estee Lauder. We're sold.

5. Brown is the new black

We'd hazard a guess at least 90% of mascara wearers opt for black, but today's show made a great case for brown. Pat wiggled chocolate-toned mascara into just the roots of the lashes to add subtle definition without looking 'overly done'. A trick she also used at the Tom Ford show earlier in the week. Two's a trend, right?

6. Backstage catering should always involve croissants

Naturally we can't go backstage without eyeing up the food options. And when you spot that Cipriani is doing the backstage catering you know you're onto a good thing. Models tucked into platters of buttery croissants with jam and bowls of berries and granola. We may have taken a croissant (or three) for the road
