In the half-century(!) since Star Trek launched, it's been host to many famous faces – some Hollywood favourites who were secret Trekkies, some unknown actors who went on to become huge stars. Everyone knows Tom Hardy was in Star Trek: Nemesis and that Chris Hemsworth played Kirk's dad in the first of the modern movie reboots, but there are plenty more surprising names on the Enterprise's roster too…

1. Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson – Star Trek: Voyager, 'Tsunkatse'

Back when he was still just a pro wrestler and not yet the biggest movie star in the world, Dwayne made one of his first acting appearances (if you don't count the WWE) on Voyager, playing Seven of Nine's opponent in an alien combat tournament.

He even performed some of his signature wrestling moves – and the famous People's Eyebrow. Always the crowdpleaser.

2. Kirsten Dunst – Star Trek: The Next Generation, 'Dark Page'

An 11-year-old Dunst stepped aboard the Enterprise back in 1993, playing the telepathic alien Hedril in the episode 'Dark Page'. One year on and her role in '94's Interview With the Vampire sent her star rocketing at warp speed.

3. Iggy Pop – Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, 'The Magnificent Ferengi'

When it comes to Trek guest appearances, Iggy's the world's forgotten boy...

The Stooges frontman played the Dominion commander Yelgrun in a 1998 episode of DS9, having turned down another part back in 1995 due to touring commitments.

4. Kelsey Grammer – Star Trek: The Next Generation, 'Cause and Effect'

Frasier is in the building! Grammer appeared in TNG's timey-wimey episode 'Cause and Effect' as Captain Morgan Bateson, captain of the USS Bozeman.

Frasier Crane was still a year away from getting his own show, but Cheers had already made Kelsey by the time of his Trek stint in 1992.

5. Christian Slater – Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country

A closet Trek fan, Slater was already a big name in 1991, but the fact that his mother – Mary Jo Slater – was the casting director on that year's (sorely underrated) big-screen outing The Undiscovered Country probably didn't hurt when it came to landing him a cameo.

6. Kim Cattrall – Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country

The sixth Trek movie also has Cattrall cast against glamorous type – you might say, illogically – as a traitorous Vulcan officer.

The forgotten role came in her wilderness years after an initial burst of '80s success in films like Police Academy, Mannequin and Big Trouble in Little China and prior to her big comeback in Sex and the City, which came seven years later.

7. Famke Janssen – Star Trek: The Next Generation, 'The Perfect Mate'

Before X-Men, before even Goldeneye's femme fatale Xenia Onatopp, Janssen made her TV debut in this 1992 episode of TNG.

Her character Kamala was *deep breath* a Kriosian empathic metamorph from Krios Prime, and ended up falling for suave Captain Picard (Patrick Stewart). And you thought Kirk got all the ladies...

8. Joan Collins – Star Trek: The Original Series, 'The City on the Edge of Forever'

Some 15 years before the big hair and shoulder pads of Dynasty, Dame Joan played tragic peace protestor Edith Keeler in this vintage Trek outing from 1967.

Bones saved the doomed Keeler's life, causing serious damage to history. So Captain Kirk, who'd since fallen in love with Edith, natch, had to rewrite time (again!) and ensure her death in an automobile accident to preserve the timeline. Ouch.

9. Christopher Lloyd – Star Trek III: The Search for Spock

Great Scott! One year before he played the scatty, loveable genius Doc Brown in the Back to the Future films, Lloyd was the main antagonist in 1984's Star Trek III, playing Kruge, leader of a pack of hostile Klingons.

Lloyd's character is notorious among Trek fans as the man (well, Klingon) responsible for the death of Captain Kirk's son David (Merritt Butrick) – with The Shat later avenging his son's death by literally punching Kruge into a river of lava.

10. Seth MacFarlane – Star Trek: Enterprise, 'The Forgotten' and 'Affliction'

He's more a familiar voice than familiar face, but Family Guy's MacFarlane made two short but freakin' sweet on-screen appearances in Enterprise as Starfleet officer Rivers, who incurred the wrath of chief engineer Trip.

MacFarlane would later reveal that bringing Trek back to television was his dream TV job, though we doubt he's too sore at losing the gig to Hannibal's Bryan Fuller, admitting at the time: "I don't know who would give me the keys to that car."
