Olympian opens new school

A high-profile Olympian is set to open a Gloucestershire school's new £6million building.

Former ski-jumper Eddie 'The Eagle' Edwards, will be landing at St White's Primary School in Cinderford to cut the ribbon next Thursday.

Gloucestershire County Council funded the replacement of the school as their old premises was in poor condition and split across two sites.

Funding was also allocated to the redevelopment for new housing in Cinderford. This granted £500,000 to the project, as well as a contribution of land from the owner.

As well as the opening ceremony for the school, pupils from St White's will be taking part in a 'Race for Life' event, where Eddie will present participants with medals.

Teresa Cross, head teacher at St White's, said: "It is such a pleasure to have someone like Eddie here with us to officially open our new school building.

"We've all been really looking forward to this day. It gives everyone who has been involved with this incredible venture, a chance to celebrate and marvel at the sheer joy this stunning building is bringing to everyone who uses it.

"It also gives us the opportunity to thank everyone for the part they have played in its completion."

Cllr Paul McLain, cabinet member for children and young people, said: "I'm really pleased that we've been able to put this money into the new building for St. White's School.

"This £6million investment will mean that pupils can benefit from the latest facilities and ensure that they reach their potential.

"It has been a really exciting time for pupils and staff here at the school since they moved from their old building in March.

"I hope that the pupils and staff enjoy their new school building, and can make some happy new memories there."
