Tribute to women who wrote jazz, blues and soul at The White Horse, Sept. 16

PRESS RELEASE FROM WHITE HORSE BLACK MOUNTAIN:

Women have been writing American popular music since there was such a thing, but they’ve often had to work hard to gain the level of recognition granted to their male counterparts. The inspirational stories and music of the women who created some of the greatest standards in jazz, blues and soul are at the heart of a special show, “Wine, Women and Song” performed by jazz/blues vocalist Evalina Everidge and her guests at the White Horse Black Mountain on Friday, September 16 at 8 p.m.

Evalina Everidge is a torch singer in the classic mold, her sultry vocals evoking the spirits of Peggy Lee, Nancy Wilson, Blossom Dearie and Sarah Vaughn as well as more recent artists like Maria Muldaur and Bonnie Raitt. She absorbed jazz literally from the cradle when her uncle would play jazz ballad lullabies on his trumpet. She soaked up the songs of the Great American Songbook in a music rich home and performed as a young adult in folk music coffee houses on both sides of the Atlantic. She later went on to join an all-girl R&B/Rock band and explored musical theater before taking a hiatus from performing. She’s circled back to the her first love, singing the timeless tunes of the great jazz and blues divas throughout WNC. One of her online fans writes that Evelina’s voice “sounds like an angel that drank a little too much bourbon”.

Joining with Evalina in saluting female composers will be singer/songwriter Darlyne Cain, blues chanteuse Peggy Ratusz and Asheville newcomer Peggy Swain. Stellar accompaniment will be provided by versatile pianist Richard Schulman, genre-crossing singer/vocalist Cary Fridley and drummer/percussionist Robin Northwick.

Show starts at 8 p.m. Tickets are $15.
