How to Treat Rosacea the Natural Way

Rosacea If you are constantly flushing around the cheek area, or your blood vessels are prominent and these are accompanied by pimples, chances are, you are suffering from Rosacea.  This ailment affects an estimated 14 million of Americans and is common among fair skinned individuals such as those of Celtic, Scandinavian or Northern European descent.  If you are one of those affected with Rosacea, it’s best to visit your dermatologist for expert medical opinion.  Meanwhile, we’ve rounded up some tips on how to treat rosacea the natural way.

Change Your Diet

Rosacea Diet Avoid Spicy Food While the idea of spicy food, hot beverages or a glass of wine may seem appetizing to you, it’s time to rethink your food choices in order to calm rosacea flare up.  Spicy food containing cayenne, pepper and paprika is best avoided.  As an alternative, you can concoct seasoning out of less ‘hot’ spices such as coriander, turmeric, cumin, cinnamon, or cardamom.

Make sure you also reduce heat in your beverages.  Try to drink your favorite cup of tea or hot chocolate when it has cooled down, or switch to iced coffee.  Avoid alcohol as it may trigger your condition.

Aside from these, pay attention to the food you eat which aggravates your condition.  Prepare a food diary of what to eat and what to avoid, as some rosacea sufferers experience a varying range of food triggers.

Avoid Extreme Weather

Too cold or too hot – both are not good for rosacea.  In extremely warm weather, try to stay indoors in an air conditioned room.  If you have to go outdoors, always wear sunscreen with a minimum SPF of 15 and try to minimize sun exposure by wearing a hat.  Chew on ice chips or spritz on a cool facial mist to lower temperature of your face.

Rosacea Avoid Extreme Weather In cold and windy weather, try not to stay outdoors for too long, or wear a ski mask if you plan on engaging outdoor activities.  Wear a scarf to cover up your cheeks and nose.

Be Mindful of Your Skin Care Products

There are many products in the market today targeted to reduce redness.  Avoid those with hydrocortisone or other steroids as this only works temporarily and might even cause more inflamed vessels in the long run.

Instead, choose products which have anti-inflammatory and calming properties, such as those containing licorice, feverfew, or chamomile.  You can also make a DIY scrub using oatmeal and honey.

Antibiotics

If you have a severe case of rosacea, this may best be treated by topical antibiotics and oral antibiotics.  Consult your dermatologist before taking any medication.

Those are just some of the tips on how to treat rosacea the natural way.  Deep breathing and relaxing yoga exercises are also helpful in reducing stress, which could trigger rosacea.  Choose mineral makeup products to cover up redness and apply lightly.
