The Giants were blanked, 3-0, by the Cardinals on Sunday, losing their second straight contest, and splitting the four-game matchup over the weekend at AT&T Park. San Francisco has been shut out 12 times in 2016 -- tied with the Marlins and Braves for second most in the majors (Padres -- 15).

Los Angeles dropped a 10-9 decision to the D-backs in 12 innings yesterday, splitting its four-game series over the weekend at Chase Field. With the Giants' loss yesterday, the Dodgers' magic number is now eight to clinch a playoff spot, and nine to clinch the NL West.

Madison Bumgarner allowed three runs (all earned) in 6.2 IP last Wednesday against the Padres, taking the loss, and dropping to 2-2 with a 4.99 ERA in his last five outings. Bumgarner, who is looking for career win No. 100 tonight, has not defeated the Dodgers since May 21 last season (0-4, 4.71 ERA in last five outings vs. Dodgers).

Clayton Kershaw threw 5.0 innings of one-hit, shutout ball last Wednesday at Yankee Stadium, but had to settle for a no-decision in the contest. Kershaw, who hasn't won a game since June 20 against the Nats, is 4-0 with a 1.54 ERA in his last five outings vs. the Giants (since September 2 last season).

Kike Hernandez went 2-for-3 with a home run and two RBI yesterday, recording his first multi-hit performance since August 23, and going deep for the first time in his last 57 plate appearances overall (since August 7 vs. Red Sox). Hernandez has a .579 career batting average vs. Madison Bumgarner -- best of any player all-time (minimum 15 AB).

LOS ANGELES -- Bruce Bochy realizes his club is facing an enormous challenge. However, the San Francisco manager remains confident the Giants can reverse their fortunes and play their way into the postseason.
"These guys have been through it," Bochy said. "I don't know what's going to happen, but I know this is a battle-tested group and they'll go out there and play their normal game as hard as they can. They're going to handle it. There's no worry there."

Slumping Giants turn to Cueto for Game 2 in L.A.

LOS ANGELES (AP)  The San Francisco Giants lost two important players Tuesday night and still managed a critical victory.
Eduardo Nunez and Brandon Belt homered to help the Giants overcome injuries to All-Star pitcher Johnny Cueto and shortstop Brandon Crawford in a 2-0 win over the Los Angeles Dodgers.
