It was some 2 years ago now that Calvin Moorley and I wrote for the Journal of Advanced Nursing Using Social Media For Continuous Professional Development and much has changed.  Revalidation has been implemented and more and more nurses are engaging professionally via social media.  However I think much of this article is still very relevant and the concept of using social media for CPD is still very new to some.

A few weeks ago someone asked how many nurses were using social media for continuing professional development, not being sure of the answer I thought that a quick straw poll via Twitter might shed some light:



A resounding (and I say resounding for reasons that will become clear in a moment) 37% said yes!! So why resounding … well I think that’s pretty amazing as look at how far we have come … it wasn’t so long ago that social media in nursing was totally frowned upon and here we are at a stage where people are using it to inform their work.  What was more interesting were some of the comments we received following the poll which mostly said "not yet!"  Which is pretty wonderful as people clearly are thinking about it, and I started to think that maybe as peoples time to Revalidate comes closer this will spur them into action? Then I read Jenny Clarkes blog post Revalidation – My Journey and I loved how she made a passing reference to using social media for her CPD … it made it all so common place and .. well .. normal! Social media is part of our everyday “normal” lives and it’s becoming part of our everyday “normal” working lives, some of us are further along on this journey than others but its wonderful to see how nurses (and midwives) are creatively using their time in social media spaces to inform their work as practitioners.

This leaves me with a few questions which seemed like a brilliant place to start for a Twitter chat:

  • How can we use social media for CPD?
  • How do we help the “not yets”? 
  • How can we make using social media for CPD easy and accessible? 
  • How do we help people to become socially CPD savvy?
  • What are the do's and don't of using social media for CPD? 
  • What are peoples practical hints and tips re social media and CPD?

Sometimes its very easy to assume that everyone is at the same stage of understanding as ourselves and social media is a prime example of that.  I spend a lot of time surrounded by people who 'get' social media and its worth in terms of learning and CPD so its very tricky to look at things from another perspective and understand that some people really are at the very start (or have not even begun) their professional social media journey. I found the polls that accompanied this WeNurses Twitter discussion very enlightening in terms of where other people 'are at':

 













Ok, so this is a very small amount of people, and utterly unscientific, but it is what it is and it gives us a rough snapshot.  The good news is that people are thinking social media and CPD .. the bad news is that employers dont seem to be! What i found very interesting was that many people had shown a colleague the value, which to my mind means that they themselves have found it valuable.  This is all still a work in progress and its clear that there is much to be done but what is amazing is that the enthusiasm is there.

The discussion itself was fascinating, raising many issues that i had not previously considered.  The recognition of social media based CPD by employers was a real concern:






Which begs the question 'How do we get employers to both realise the potential and promote social media for CPD? There were some real solutions discussed:










All of this gives me lots of food for thought, and whilst WeCommunities often give individuals the tools and resources they need to show the value to Social Media to a colleague are we missing an opportunity to involve employers? So my conclusion here is that I need to think a little differently about what 'we' can do to give employers the confidence and  resources to promote social media for CPD, some of the suggestions above are a fab starting point ... now all I need is a few people to help? Any takers?
