Songaminute man raises over £75k for Alzheimer’s Society

A man with Alzheimer’s and his son whose videos of their carpool karaoke sessions have gone viral have so far raised more than £75,000 for Alzheimer’s Society, with the total tripling in the last week.

Ted McDermott has sung throughout his life, as a Butlins Redcoat, and in clubs around the country. Despite suffering from Alzheimer’s, he can still remember the words to many songs, and has earned himself the nickname the Songaminute Man.

His son Mac started fundraising via JustGiving in June for Alzheimer’s Society by posting videos of their in-car song sessions to thank the charity for the support given by its phoneline since Ted’s diagnosis, with an initial target of £1,000. Their videos have gone viral, raising £26,500 by 9th August, with the total then tripling in a week.

On his JustGiving page, Mac McDermott said:

“I’m fundraising for the Alzheimer’s Society because of the advice they’ve given us in the last few years. Without them we would have had very little idea or support about how to deal with even the basics of Dad’s condition. The plan is to share as much of Dad’s singing as we can and hopefully it will help raise money to fund the work of the Alzheimer’s Society – more specifically to go towards paying for a person at the end of the phoneline to help other people like us.”
