KUALA LUMPUR: The three-hour "Tangkap Malaysian Official No 1" rally ended peacefully, without any untoward incidents.
At least 1,500 rally-goers clad in black and white clothing had gathered in front of Menara Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) after the organiser's initial gathering point in Dataran Merdeka was cordoned off by police.
Checks by theSun saw a very strong police presence at Dataran Merdeka and also at the two other meeting points, Sogo and Masjid Negara.
Earlier, speaking on behalf of OCPD Dang Wangi, ASP Mohd Zain said the rally was illegal and had demanded that the crowd disperse.
"Joining this rally is an offence under the Peaceful Assembly Act. Hence I urge all to disperse," he said.
The rally ended with a symbolic capture of four caricatures depicting individuals said to be involved in the 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB) issue.
Meanwhile, event spokesperson Anis Syafiqah Md Yusof, in her closing speech, said the authorities should be thankful to the students who gathered for the rally today.
"They should actually be thankful because we (students) are the ones who took the initiative to catch the actual criminals.
"I thank all of you who have made your way down here today for the love of the country," she said.
On a separate matter, Mohd Ali Baharom-led Gerakan Merah group, which had earlier planned to hold a counter rally, pulled out from doing so after being advised by the city police department.
Former premier Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad, who had also planned to make his way to the rally, was also not present after his aide confirmed that he had to leave for Langkawi.
The #TangkapMO1 rally, organised by a coalition of student and youth groups, is calling for the arrest of the "Malaysian Official 1" named in the United States' Department of Justice (DoJ) recent civil suits seeking the seizure of assets linked to 1Malaysia Development Berhad.
