The Best Olympics Photos So Far, From Swords to Big Green Pools

WIRED offers the very best photos from the Rio Olympics this week.

The Olympic Games are inherently dramatic, a parade of Did you see that? and Oh my god, she nailed it! moments.

The first week didn't disappoint. Simone Biles led the US women's gymnastics squad to a commanding victory, while Japan's Kohei Uchimura did the same for his country's team. Fiji's rugby team beat Britain to win the country's first gold medal ever, and Brazilians lost their mind over table tennis ace Hugo Calderano.

The drama of Olympic competition invariably leads to heart-touching moments, but even by that measure it would be tough to top the poignancy of South Korean gymnast Lee Eun-ju snapping a selfie with her North Korean competitor, Hong Un-Jong.

Something amazing happens everywhere you look, which is why photographers love covering it. Hundreds of them are in Rio, working long hours with little sleep, to capture as many of those moments as they can. Here are their best photos from the first week of the Games.
