Watch: Avocado and Finger Lime Farming on California’s Central Coast

Shokunin visits Shanley Farms for a produce lesson

This week on Shokunin, host and sushi chef David Bouhadana visits Shanley Farms in Moro Bay, California, to tour the evolving agricultural space maintained by Jim Shanley and his daughter Megan.

After retiring from a career in commodity trading and animal feed manufacturing, Jim Shanley bought an avocado ranch on California's central coast — well before the fruit became a luxurious staple in the American diet — and has been dedicated to growing high quality produce ever since. Watching the demand for his primary crop skyrocket inspired Shanley to look into more little-known fruits he could help popularize. In 2010 he became the first farmer to commercially grow finger limes, a bright and juicy citrus fruit composed of small pearls that originally hails from Australia, in the United States. Shanley Farms now ships its limes across the country, and is hoping the fruit will take off. Watch the video above to learn more.
