One of the surprising things about Suicide Squad was that Harley Quinn and the Joker's relationship was actually portrayed as more loving and devoted than we've been used to in past depictions.

(Well, putting aside the Joker torturing her and leaving her for dead in a crashed car - he is an insane villain after all.)

Jared Leto's character goes out of his way to free Margot Robbie's anti-heroine from the Squad and bring her home safe, but a picture from a deleted scene in David Ayer's movie hints at a darker portrayal of Harley and her Puddin'.

Posted by Rolling Stone Brazil (via Batman News), the image shows the Joker aggressively gesturing into Harley's face during their helicopter escape.

This lends weight to the list of supposed deleted scenes which was leaked just after Suicide Squad's release, which claimed that originally the Joker was supposed to argue with Harley and push her out of the helicopter.

The final cut had her accidentally falling instead, while Mr J looked on in horror.

Apparently other scenes of the Joker's abuse were also removed from the film.

The traditional portrayal of the two characters has Harley obsessed with the Joker, while he is at best unconcerned with her, and only uses her as a pawn in his war with Batman.

Will Smith, Joel Kinnaman, Viola Davis, Jai Courtney, Jay Hernandez, Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje and Cara Delevingne also starred in the film about a group of criminals enlisted into a governmental black-ops team.

Suicide Squad is in cinemas now.
