Can managers really be the root cause of stress?

It is not uncommon in the UK for managers to be the cause of strife, stress and discontent at work rather than the providers of solutions.  The reason is that too many are not trained in management before they are promoted and bad habits tend to become embedded.  Management can be defined as 'the achievement of results through the efforts of others'.  That being so, the ability to read and motivate 'others' is a critical part of management.  In Germany it is common to put management training in before promotion and it is a great pity that we have not learned from their experience.

Many senior Managers are not only stressed but suffer from Executive Depression which often goes untreated because of the stigma attached to it.

Definitely. The fault often lies higher up than the manager. If the manager is poorly selected based on how well they did the job of the people they are going to manage rather than their skills in managing people, or if the manager has not been given any real authority so they are just a mouthpiece for a company with an unhealthy culture for example. Everybody is different so managing people will never be a science but I think a genuine passion for wanting to help people be the best they can be is probably a good base to start with.

In most cases I would say yes. Poor managers can directly cause stress to colleagues, or by not addressing working environment issues cause stress. It is the job of managers and leaders to coach, assist, mentor and so on. A happy workforce will drive the business forward without being micro-managed. What a lot of managers forget or don't understand is that nobody goes to work to deliberately do a bad job (- unless their job is professional saboteur :) People go to work not just to earn money but to be happy and feel valued.
