As Britain’s biggest-selling stand-up comedian, it’s been a good old while since Peter Kay opened for anyone.

So fans were gobsmacked when he appeared as a surprise support act for Jason Manford at his show at The Lowry last night.

The Bolton comedian came on stage to gasps of shock after Canadian comic Allyson June Smith opened the show at the Salford Quays theatre.

And it’s safe to say he got a pretty warm reception from the crowd.

Liz Buckley tweeted: “When Peter Kay turns up as the support act for Jason Manford and you’re on the 3rd row. My life is complete.”

Ally Spencer added: “Great night watching @JasonManford and a surprise appearance from Peter Kay topped it off. Crying laughing!”

Jason wrote on his Facebook page afterwards: “Thank you Salford! Really fun gig with sterling support work from Allyson June Smith & a young up and coming comedian from Bolton, Peter something.

“Decent delivery, nice shirt, needs to lose that ‘garlic bread’ routine though, that’ll never catch on!”
