Happy 1st Birthday Tribal Impact

Happy 1st Birthday Tribal Impact

I can hardly believe that it's been one whole year since Tribal Impact (what I sometimes refer to my fourth child) was born.

Just seven weeks after giving birth to my third daughter I took voluntary redundancy from my previous employer to pursue a lifelong dream – to start my own business.

Time has passed so quickly. I’m more than reminded of that by witnessing my little baby girl become a bum shuffling toddler.

Juggling a business with a fairly hectic family life hasn’t been easy. When I’m working I feel I should be with the family. When I’m with the family I feel like I should be working. On the flip side, I probably see more of my kids now I am minus the 4 hour commute each day and conference calls around the clock.

Despite all the turbulence that comes with learning how to run a business including the frustration, the anxiety and the excitement when a customer says “yes”, it’s quite incredible to realise I have made it through the first year already. More than that, I have loved this first year in business and am left feeling more positive, energised and excited for the future of Tribal Impact than ever before.

This one year anniversary has given me an opportunity to reflect on all the amazing people I’ve met, the new industries I’ve been able to learn about, my customers who have supported this journey of growth and all those people who have advised me along the way. Thank you.

Building a business has to be one of the most rewarding, exhausting and exhilarating adventures ever. I have come to recognise the wobbles - those moments of doubt, fear and hesitation - but I’m learning to manage those wobbles. They can throw me right off course and often there’s no time for that. Once decisions are made, I have to go all in on making them work. No looking back.

In summary, my first year has been about:

  • Focusing on what I love most about my purpose in life – building socially connected businesses
  • Keeping my eyes open to new opportunities – they come around when you least expect them.
  • Focus on building relationships - not revenue.
  • Having fun - if I’m not enjoying it, why bother?

Tribal Impact is growing up. We’ve been through the teething stage – it’s now time to steady the wobbles and start learning to walk like a proper grown up.

As I write this blog post I have three new customers coming on board during the next few months. I’ll also continue working with many of my existing customers who are just wonderful to work with. Finally, I’m developing new offerings that will launch at the end of September to help my customers scale their social advocacy programs further. Exciting times.

I’m looking forward to the next 12 months and the upcoming phase in my adventure…baby steps though. Baby steps.

Sarah Goodall is the Managing Director of Tribal Impact. She has spent 20+ years in B2B Marketing, most recently leading social business for SAP in EMEA where she trained over 3000 employees as part of the global social selling and advocacy program.  She believes that organisations need to shift their focus from social media marketing towards conversation led marketing. After all, people talk to people…not logos.  Through training, tools and content Tribal Impact focuses on supporting B2B marketing and communication professionals that are ready for this new approach to social media.
