Lipstick is always such a good idea in the mornings, you can't beat a colourful, juicy pout, especially now it's summer. But come afternoon? It tends to be more of a flaky, dry muted stain that we end up picking and peeling off in frustration.

Luckily, there's ways to prevent this and ensure your lippy goes the distance, Bobbi Brown PRO Artist, Hannah Martin tells us how.

Scrub down. For lipstick to stay put, you need to exfoliate your lips. It will make them soft and supple, ensuring your colour glides on smoothly. I like to mix Bobbi’s Extra Soothing Balm, £42, and Buffing Grains, £30, together to create a DIY lip scrub. Gently massage over dry lips, and then rinse away. This leaves your lips perfectly primed for a heavily pigmented colour.

Prep and prime. Next step is to layer lips with a balm just for that extra bit of conditioning. Do this well in advance of applying your lip colour, and be sure to remove any excess balm to prevent colour sliding off.

Pencil it in. Line and fill your entire lip with pencil that matches your lipstick, this will provide a stain and base for your lip colour to adhere to, therefore making it last longer.

Go for matte. These formulas by far last longer than any other, and sure they can be drying, but providing you follow the prepping steps (above) your lips will stay smooth and full of colour.

Double up. Re-line the lips one more time with the same pencil to absolutely ensure the colour will stay put and not bleed.

Finish with powder. We're not talking heaps, but to lock the colour in place just use a dusting of translucent powder. Either apply directly to the lipstick or, use a single ply tissue, hold it over the lips and push powder through it with a brush.
