Norway may gift Finland a mountain for its 100th birthday

Try topping that!

Finland will celebrate 100 years of freedom from Russia next year, and like a loving neighbour, Norway has already decided on the birthday gift: a mountain peak, which will become the highest point in Finland.

The 1,331m summit of the Hálditšohkka mountain spur lies within the Arctic Circle. Norway is planning to move its border by about 40m or so to pass on the peak to its neighbour.

The idea was proposed last year by retired geophysicist and government surveyor, Bjørn Geirr Harsson, who recalled his confusion about the border while flying over the region.

The decision isn't final, though. Norway's prime minister, Erna Solberg, has cited a "few formal difficulties" coming in the way. But there's massive support from all quarters. While Svein Leiros, mayor of the Norwegian village of Kåfjord, has expressed written support to the government along with other local politicians, more than 14,000 Facebook users worldwide have liked the Halti as anniversary gift page, run by Harsson's son, based in USA. The only objection is from the native Sami community, who believe the region should be a no-man's land so that the reindeer roam free.

Truly, love is all about moving mountains, and Norway knows it best.
