Iceland’s stunning beauty and majestic landscapes have served as the backdrop of a surprising number of films, ranging from Clint Eastwood’s “Letters from Iwo Jima,” where the black beaches of Sandvik doubled for similarly hued sands on the tropical island, to Darren Aronofsky’s “Noah,” where the Nordic country portrayed Biblical lands with an otherworldly feel.
To be sure, producers are lured by incentives, which are about to increase. In 2017 Iceland will raise its rebate to 25% from 20%. Television as well as film projects are eligible. A cultural test is required and the program has no annual cap.
But it’s fair to say that the country’s spectacular natural wonders also play a major role in attracting productions. These include fiery live volcanoes, heart-stopping ocean cliffs, steam-encircled hot springs, cascading waterfalls, and monstrous glaciers. Reykjavik, the capital, is a popular tourist destination and one of the world’s cleanest cities. Much of the nation remains total wilderness.
Other films and TV shows that have shot in Iceland include “Fast 8” (2017), “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story” (2016); “Jason Bourne” (2016); “Captain America: Civil War” (2016); “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” (2015); “Interstellar” (2014); “The Secret Life of Walter Mitty” (2013); “Thor: The Dark World” (2013); “Prometheus” (2012); and “Game of Thrones” (2011-Present).
