A couple of days ago, Linus Torvalds announced the release of the Linux 4.7 kernel, and we were very curious to know which distribution would be the first to adopt it. Well, it didn't take long for the SparkyLinux devs to push the new Linux 4.7 kernel in the unstable repositories, but it looks like Clear Linux now uses it in the stable ones.
As Linux kernel 4.7 is not an LTS (Long Term Support) one, Clear Linux developers inform their users that if they want to use a long-term supported kernel, they can continue to stay on the LTS channel. "The Linux* kernel (for non-LTS kernels) has been updated to 4.7. This version features a host of driver updates, support for next generation graphics, and a key filesystem performance improvement," says Eva Hutanu.
X.Org Server 1.18.4 and Ceph 10.2.2 are available as well
Among other updated components that landed in the Clear Linux repositories during the week that passed, we can mention the X.Org Server 1.18.4 display server, which brings improvements to Glamour and modesetting, Ceph 10.2.2 distributed object store and file system, which support execution of Python code thanks to the new Cython feature, as well as hardware-accelerated GStreamer support.
Other than that, it appears that Clear Linux now uses the OverlayFS file system as a replacement for AUFS in the non-VM Docker implementation. Ultimately, numerous other packages have been updated to their latest versions at the moment of writing this article, so it's best to update your Clear Linux installation as soon as possible.
