Carlisle Cathedral has been awarded £400,000 to carry out "essential" repairs to its roof.

The money has been granted by the First World War Centenary Cathedral Repairs Fund.

It will be used to replace the deteriorating lead roof which is more than 80-years-old.

The Very Reverend Mark Boyling said it was "wonderful" the cathedral was able to repair the building after years of problems.
