Stonewall Inn Named State Historic Site

In June 1969, a NYC police raid on the Stonewall Inn sparked several days of riots and demonstrations inside the Greenwich Village bar and Christopher Park, located across the street. These events are credited with launching the modern LGBT movement, marking the first time lesbian women, gay men, bisexual and transgender people demanded their civil rights. Learn more about the history of the Stonewall Inn.

Recognizing the importance of this landmark, President Obama declared the Stonewall Inn, Christopher Park and surrounding streets as a National Monument, and Governor Cuomo designated the still-operating bar as the Stonewall Inn State Historic Site. The Stonewall Inn is the first national monument to LGBT rights. It will also be a unique partnership between state and federal government, as well as a private establishment.
