Avoid crime with these tips

HONEYDEW - Most crimes can be avoided if you are aware of possible dangers.

The Honeydew CPF said that despite numerous previous warnings, it seems that in many cases the public actually invite crime.

Honeydew CPF, public relations officer, Jon Rosenberg highlighted many of the problems in this area that could easily be avoided if people pay attention. He said that theft out of vehicles is still a problem in this area, but people still go to the shops or gym and leave valuables such as laptops, handbags and cell phones in clear view on the seats of their cars.

“In a number of these cases car jamming devices are used. If people just check that their vehicles are properly locked, we could reduce these crimes,” said Rosenberg.

Beggars continue to be another big issue throughout the area. People encourage them to stay in the area by feeding them or providing them with money and clothing. “While we often feel sorry for the beggars, helping them only brings more beggars to the area,” said Rosenberg.

He added that flat screen TV’s are targeted during house break-ins, yet people leave the empty boxes outside on waist removal day, making it a perfect advertisement.

“Wheelie bins make useful step ladders and residents are urged to put their bins out as late as possible and bring them in as soon as they are emptied,” said Rosenberg.

Lastly, Rosenberg said domestic workers should be warned never to let anyone onto the property unless the homeowner has advised them to do so. “Should a stranger be at the gate, they must never go out to the gate, but rather talk through the intercom or an open window,” said Rosenberg. It is clear that many crimes can be avoided if one is just aware of the possible threats.
