THE blues are back in town as Armagh plays host to the 7 Hills Blues Fest for four days of music, entertainment, food and fun from August 11-14.

This year’s biggest-ever programme features more than 70 performances in 30-plus venues across the cathedral city, most of them free. Acts including Alison McGrath, Mirenda Rosenberg, Dave McHugh, Ronnie Greer, Tony Villiers, Thin As Lizzy, Skinny Elvis, The Watery Hill Boys, Stone Cold Hobo and Amanda St John feature.

Food has a big presence too; now in its sixth year, the festival is hosting some tasty-sounding foodie events in Armagh’s eateries, in celebration of Northern Ireland’s Year of Food and Drink and of the area's produce.

A Picnic in the Palace Park on Saturday August 13, for example, will combine an afternoon of food, fun and games with the best of blues in the stunning setting of the Friary ruins; while the following day's ‘BBQ 'n’ Blues’ event at The Shambles Yard promises top-notch street food, washed down with locally produced apple juice and ciders.

For musicians from age eight to 18, there are workshops on the harmonica, guitar and drums; budding blues artists can get tips from performers including The Bluez Katz and Mirenda Rosenberg.

“Every year, the city of Armagh welcomes thousands of music fans, solo travellers, groups and families to enjoy an unrivalled line-up of music and activities guaranteed to enthral," Lord Mayor of Armagh City, Banbridge and Craigavon Borough Council Garath Keating said of the 7 Hills Blues Fest.

"A real gem for the summer, the city is buzzing with the best music, craic, hospitality and countless things to do, creating a real feel-good factor which few festivals can emulate.”
