A visitor gives himself up to the rush of water pounding on him in Saut d' Eau, 68km north of Port au Prince, Haiti, during a pilgrimage.

Each year, Haitian Christians and voodoo believers flock to this waterfall in honour of Our Lady of Mount Carmel, also revered in the Haitian voodoo culture as the goddess of love Ezili Danto.

According to tradition, on July 16, 1847, the Virgen del Carmen appeared in this place atop a palm tree. So every year, thousands of pilgrims gather from all over the country to pray for healing or to ask for favours during the July 16th celebrations.

Many sick and injured would lay in the water and let it wash over them.
