The development cycle of the openSUSE Leap 42.2 operating system continues, and today we would like to inform our readers about the availability of the third and last Alpha build in the series.

Yes, that's right, OpenSuSE Leap 42.2 Alpha 3 is now available for public testing, and it looks like it includes all the stable and thoroughly tested core components of the commercial SUSE Linux Enterprise 12 Service Pack 2 (SLE12SP2) operating system, which received a Public Beta build last month.

Even if the Alpha 3 release of openSUSE Leap 42.2 comes only one month since the second Alpha version, the development team has managed to add many interesting improvements, as well as to update various packages. For example, they've completed the GNOME 3.20 update, integrated KDE Plasma 5.7, and added Texlive 2015.

"The merge of the SLE12SP2 core components is basically done now. Since SLE enters release candidate phase now we won't see many updates coming from there anymore. So even though it's called Alpha 3 we are on a pretty solid base already," says Ludwig Nussel in the release announcement.

Here's what's coming in openSUSE Leap 42.2 Beta 1

The development cycle of openSUSE Leap 42.2 will continue with the first of two Beta releases, which should hit the streets exactly one month from today, on August 25, 2016, and it looks like the development team has a lot of work in progress to get everything in shape for Beta 1.

However, things are looking pretty stable for now on the openSUSE Leap 42.2 front. After the Beta 1 release, there will be a second and last Beta version, which should land on September 21, followed closely by the first Release Candidate (RC) build on October 6. The second Release Candidate is coming October 18, 2016.

The final release of openSUSE Leap 42.2 will be made available in the first week of November, but right now, there's no official date set in the release schedule. Until then, you can download the openSUSE Leap 42.2 Alpha 3 ISOs right now via our website and take the operating system for a test drive.
