This book as so many good and great reviews, don't let mine get to you. I highly recommend to give it a chance, seeing for yourself if it works or not. It might be just me for whom it didn't work out!

House Rules was my "Blind Date" for January. Even though I picked the surprise-me-book I really thought this might be working for me. The blurb sounds intriguing and so I dived into this book with my hopes up high.

Sadly this time I got quite disappointed. Not sure if it's because the book itself or if it's because I've read so many great books closer to date and in comparison this book can't stand a chance.

For me the storyline just didn't work out. In my opinion it was flat and consisted somewhat mostly of the mental discussion of each MC whether they should give in the insta attraction and follow their heart or not. Combined with a whole bunch of mostly the same reasons why the think it's no good idea to get close to the other. Each of them had their very own haunted ghosts why they were not able to give in. Even if they did give in, it was always for a very selfish reason, at least with Knox, ending in hurting Emma deeply.

I had really problems connecting with Emma and Knox. I neither felt their chemistry nor could I be very emphatic for either of them.

Nevertheless the book has its highlights due to some unexpected plot twists in the second half. However, they felt a little forced and too many things went on at the same time, neither topic got explored any deeper. They only scratched the surface.

Other highlights are it has some really great views on how love should be and how a family should love you for who you are. Some of those are really memorable:
"What if love doesn't follow any rules?"
"Love shouldn't have rules. It shouldn't have boundaries."
"... no one controls you but you. Whatever these rules are, if you don't like them, don't follow them."
"Family shouldn't judge you. They should love and accept you for who you are."
"Life is complicated, risky and sometimes downright shitty. But, when you find that one person who makes it better, even if only by a sliver, you have to hold on."
"Love is worth breaking the rules and trusting your heart."

I really tried to like this book, honestly. But unfortunately it did nothing for me and I started skimming through the pages around 50%.

Did not enjoy!

I don’t often give less than 3 stars and I don’t like not finishing a book, so I persevered with this in the hopes that it would redeem itself - unfortunately it did not.
While the premise of the “forbidden” workplace romance was good, I didn’t enjoy this book much at all. 2 Stars are given for the HEA and the relatively ok sex scenes.
I really struggled to understand how both MC’s are practicing psychologists and yet both of them didn’t see how their behavior and feelings towards relationships actually require therapy for themselves! The “house rules” are stupid and archaic, the fact that Emma - as a 27 yo psychologist! - let her Mom dictate these rules to her and control her life, until more than 50% through the book, is just ridiculous!! Not too mention the whole Max/Sharon debacle which doesn’t really get resolved.

Loved it! Emma and Knox are amazing! So perfect together! I loved the story so much! I couldn't put it down! I love the chemistry and interaction between these two! Emma seems stuck in her ways until she meets Knox. I know what that's like and I had my own hubby pull me out of my shell. Sometimes you get caught up in the way things have always been, that you don't stop to think how they could be. I love seeing characters eyes get opened like that. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and I can't wait to read more by this author!

Stars: 5 (out of 5) for overall story
Chilies: 5 (out of 5) for heat between the sheets/or anywhere else
Chapters: 26 + Epilogue
Ending: No cliffhangers, No cheating, HEA

Review: Have you ever read a book that had you rooting passionately for them to succeed? I mean, literally scream at your iPad/Kindle when they f*ck up, cry at their losses, want to fight their enemies while wishing they would just decide to be together and live happily ever after? Well, this one will have you doing all of that. I could not put down, nor stop thinking about this story until I finished it and now I just want to start all over again!

Emma and Knox are both psychiatrists. Knox joins the group where Emma has been working for a while. Emma and Knox both have crazy family members (for Emma it’s her Mom and sister and for Knox it’s his brother). The sh*t they both have to endure while they try hard to not fall for each other and all the ‘House Rules’ established and enforced by Emma’s Mother is insane! Emma and Knox endure so much sh*t I honestly don’t think there is anything left out.

Emma – Crazy family members, stalker ex, sexy co-worker who she tries hard not to fall for, almost being heartache, attempted kidnapping, death, miscarriage and finally her crazy a** mother and sister abandoning her at the worst time because she chose not to follow the ‘House Rules’.
Knox – Older sisters who don’t have anything to do with the family, stalker ex, sexy co-worker who he tries to keep his heart away from and avoid, heartache, fight, brother’s several overdose and prison time, miscarriage and fear of losing the only woman who makes him feel whole/healed.

This novel is one I will say put down whatever you are currently reading and READ THIS STORY NOW!!! You will not be disappointed!

ARC read in exchange for honest review.

Lyssa Cole is a new author to me and this is the first time of me reading her work. I’m so glad that I got the chance to because honestly, this book was amazing. You are first drawn in by the cover and then the story itself. Lyssa knows how to keep her audience gripped to the story and not lose interest at all. If you haven’t read any of her work before then I suggest that this be the book that you start with. I know for a fact that I will be reading more of her work as it’s pretty unique.

I really did feel for Emma, even though she has grew up with her family around her she can’t seem to catch a break. Emma knows that family is important, plus she has got a list of rules that are pretty much imprinted into her brain…. The rules are simple and easy to follow, Emma’s mom reckons that if both Emma and her sister follow the rules that she put in place then that will lead her to a life of happiness….. Surly anyone would think that it’s a bit barmy considering Emma is a grown woman, doing well for herself in her job, but nope for some reason her mother and sister have to keep involving themselves in her life and are constantly trying to set her up with someone. Emma’s been following the rules for as long as she can remember but she doesn’t seem to be getting anywhere (she’s not a saint and has slipped up on the rules every now and then, but then again no one is perfect). Yet, even though her sister follows the rules things haven’t exactly been all that great, but you’ll find out more about that if you pick up this amazing book. What would exactly happen if Emma goes ahead and decides to rebel against the rules? You’ll just have to wait and see how Emma’s story turns out.

**3.5 Stars**

Emma, from a young age, has had it ingrained in her to always follow the rules. Her mom assures her that to do so will mean happiness and success will come her way. So, believing her, Emma lives her life as such, only to find herself alone and unhappy. And then she meets Knox.

Knox has always been told that love is everything, but to him, it's brought nothing but pain, leaving him feeling cold inside and he refuses to experience it again. Then, despite his surety that he doesn't need or want love, he meets Emma.

When Knox and Emma cross paths, the attraction is there, yet both are hesitant. Knox is scared to risk his heart again, while Emma is nervous about not following the rules, for surely Knox breaks every one she was brought up to adhere to.

However, there are secrets, as well as a family emergency, that could create problems for this couple and the foundation of their new relationship. Both must decide if exploring what could be is worth it.

Can Knox and Emma take a chance on the unknown? What is Emma's secret? Will Knox's family emergency work out? What happens when Emma lives a life without rules? What about when Knox realizes love, true love, really is everything? Is a HEA possible?

One-click now and follow along as a rule follower falls for the man that breaks them.

Oh how I love Emma and Knox. This book leaves you longing for these two and togetherness for so long. Each of them have issues. Emma has been brainwashed her entire life with the “house rules”. Rules she should follow and live by if she ever wants a happy ever after type of relationship. It hasn’t worked for her so far.
Knox was burned badly by love and doesn’t believe it’s in the cards for him again. Everything about Emma pulls him in but he fights it w dry step off the way.
They come together and pull apart so many times. Each needing what only the other could give. It’s sad and it’s beautiful. There’s heartache and pain and then beauty and love. A fantastic story!

As the two overcome their own internal battles, as well as the hurdles Emma's family keeps tossing out, the two still manage to come together to, to claim what they have known to be true since the moment they laid eyes on each other. I voluntarily reviewed an Advance Reader Copy of this book.

This book was hot and has some steamy sex scenes. An engaging story and passion continue to keep Lyssa Cole’s readers glued to the pages of this fascinating storyline. This book held my attention and was entertaining, but also was heartwarming and emotional. I enjoyed reading this story because it was full of emotional angst, scorching love scenes that burned through my iPad, and a compelling storyline. From the very first page, I was spellbound by these fantastically described characters that you will find yourself falling in love with. I was enthralled with the characters of Emma and Knox. Although Emma and Knox were therapists, they each had their imperfections to deal with but their journey makes them realize that they can overcome anything and any impediments. Emma finds herself quite attracted to Knox and the feeling is mutual with some sizzling chemistry that is off-the-chart hot!! There are several twists and turns within the storyline. The scenes are well written, fast-paced and flow smoothly from one scene to the next. The story will also pique your interest and draw you in from the beginning to the very end.

House Rules

This book was such a pleasure to read. I loved the two main characters, Knox and Emma, both who dealt with healing people and their problems to cope while having their own situations of their own to handle. Emma has a mother and sister who believe in ten 10 House Rules that are used to date and to find a husband. Which by the way are totally off the wall and probably date back to the 18 century. Plus they spy on Emma to make sure she isn’t breaking the rules, they set her up on dates with men who are boring and disgusting in hopes she will find love. Not a chance in hell. Knox has a crazy lady on his tail who won’t leave him alone and is a real wack job, a brother who needs real help, so he’s afraid of love, so there’s drama in this love relationship. But this story also had me smiling from the beginning. I totally enjoyed reading it. It was funny and made me laugh, parts I would have slapped the bitches in it, but a HEA that was so sweet. I would recommend this book. And I would read this authors books again.

House Rules is an incredible and very emotional story between Knox and Emma. While reading you will be all over the place, one minute everything is happy and then the next moment all hell has broken loose. This book will literally draw you in and with all the surprises and changes you won’t be able to put it down till you are done.

I fell in love with Knox and Emma from the start, even though there were times you just wanted to smack them. Knox with all his “I can’t do this, but I can’t resist her either” and Emma’s “but this goes against all the rules, even though I see the rules are stupid”.

Knox and Emma grew up in different types of homes. Knox grew up in a loving home, with parents that were there for whatever happens. Whereas, Emma grew up in home with a father that shy and demure and a mother who drilled stupid rules about how to find love in her head she didn’t know what was correct. With a lot of pushing away and denying their feelings, these two are able help each other grow.

This is the story of Emma, she was living the life her mother wanted her to with rules. She had 10 rules that her mother said she must live by. Her sister agreed that although she hadn't lived by the rules at first now was happier as she lived by them.
Against her mothers wishes Emma trained to be a psychiatrist and she decided to open up her own practice, this was a complete success until...
Meet Knox the psychiatrist who came to work at Emma's practice. He went against all of the rules her mother had put into place.
This story has great characters and I enjoyed living their lives with them. The trials and tribulations that they go through are needed to make the story whole.
I enjoyed this book as I like to see good overcome bad and I feel this is what happened.
I loved Knox he was a mans man but also a loving partner.
This book was a story of overcoming your inhibitions and coming out triumphant.
I loved it thank you to Lyssa Cole for a great read.

Oh the house rules....poor Emma and her mom and sister...they live by those rules and expect Emma to also. She grew up hearing them constantly and while I wish she fully throw those rules out the window long before she does, I get why she has trouble with it. Knox and Emma play a game of trying to avoid feelings, but you can see that there is something there instantly and I love watching their relationship play and then watching them break all the rules. Of course you understand them wanting to not get involved, I mean, they are co-workers after all, but sometimes feelings happen when you least expect it.

The book is written in both perspectives and keeps you engaged the entire time. But if you are like me you will get really frustrated with Emma early on for awhile with the "rules" idea. Knox always seems to be at the right place at the right time to help her out and he is just so charming. I love his family and like that the dynamic between the two is so different. Throw in some fun things, like speed dating, and you have a winner.

What a fantastic story by Lyssa. I absolutely loved it. Would you follow your moms rule's or House Rules on finding a husband? This story pulled me in right from the start and kept me turning pages until the very end. I just loved Knox and his ole romantic self he knew he needed to stay away from his co worker Emma, but the old saying where's there's a spark you know there's a flame just waiting for a match to light it and boy howdy any time these 2 were around each other thing's started sparking. They both know it's a bad idea to be together, but thanks to Em's mom & sister constant meddling and Knox being tired of fighting his feelings one night they give in and it's everything they thought it would be, but then reality comes knocking. Will they figure out they have found the kind of love that's ever lasting or will Em's House Rules and Knox's doubts keep them apart. I highly recommend getting this book it was sooo good.

Emma and Knox are therapists who meet when Knox starts a practice at the same place as Emma. From the beginning you feel what good people they strive to be and how they want to help others. The insta-attraction between these two is very steamy right from the start. This author does a beautiful job taking me inside the head and heart of both these characters. As I continue to read, the mantra I kept thinking is, "Physician Heal Thyself" especially when hearing Emma's internal dialogue. I felt so bad for her and the toxic thinking 'rules' that her mother made her feel she has to live by. Knox has his own family turmoil. His brother's issues with addiction cause all kinds of upheaval. Both of these families have several revelations and touching moments as the story continues... I love how Emma and Knox are beautifully flawed people that have issues from their childhood and pasts. You really see that sometimes relationships can be repaired and sometimes for you own sanity, you have to let things be. I won't give anymore of the storyline away but just say I definitely recommend that you take a journey into this story. It was a lovely read with the right amount of sexy (wink wink) and heart. Happy Reading!!!

Emma Russe, working as a therapist in a private practice. Living her life around 10 specific rules her mother has "brainwashed" her and her sister with. Rules about dating, what to do/what not to do, who to date/who not to date..and so on.
But one disaster date after another, Emma is starting to question her mothers rules. Especially when Knox Rothwell, her new co-worker, is a pantie-dropping god! But what will happen if Emma breaks the rules?

"Love shouldn't have rules. It shouldn't have boundaries."

Emma and Knox have both their own issues to work through. And their own crazy family to worry about. This book is full of crazy drama. It's like a never ending drama circle..

I thank the author for providing a copy to voluntarily review.

Sexy, stand alone romantic life angst book though I’m hoping it’s part of a new series because I really want to know more about Jane and even Melissa. Leave Emma’s crazy mom out though. She’s a hot mess that should be left alone. There were parts that I struggled with like why a highly educated woman - a therapist for pete’s sake - took so long to realize the House Rules were crazy. In the end, I’m happy both Knox and Emma realize the only rules that matter are the ones we make for ourselves when it comes to love. The book touched on a lot of issues we all may be dealing with. Crazy people in our lives, awesome friendships, addiction, lack of control, loss, finding love and afraid of being hurt, all while trying to move ourselves forward in life. Very realistic. Thank you for a great book Ms. Cole!

Emma has grown up with “house rules” that must be met when finding a husband. Her mother has instilled these rules all her life so she believes them even though everyone tells her that they are ridiculous. When Emma meets Knox there is instant chemistry but he doesn’t fit the rules. Knox is coming off a horrible relationship and not looking for a new one any time soon but he finds it hard to stay away from Emma. The two are both therapists who deal with people’s problems every day but these two have enough problems of their own.

There was a lot thrown into this story. She has family issues, he has family issues, she has a bad ex, he has a bad ex. They both kept constantly saying they shouldn’t be with the other. Emma’s mother and sister are really annoying and even though Emma gets an explanation to the house rules, there really is no resolve to their family issues. I have read and enjoyed Lyssa’s books but this one was just okay to me.

Another wonderful boos by Lyssa.

This time she brought us a beautiful story about the most insane house rule you can imagine. At the same time somebody that only wants to find somebody to fall in love.
Emma grows up with her mother insane rules, she only needs it to follow them, but they never helper to find a good relationship.

She was ready to give up until the most handsome men started working at the same office and he stole her heart with one glance.

Knox didn’t trust easily, he suffers from a lot of deception, but the beautiful girl that work with him stole his heart with one smile.

Their relationship is not easy, they will fight through everything. They got each and every obstacle in their relationship, but at the en LOVE always win.

Don’t miss this amazing book!

House rules is an emotional rollercoaster. Emma has grown up with her mother enforcing a set of rules about who she must date if she wants to find true love. Knox breaks the rules. He is not what her mother approves of in so many ways, but Knox is not looking for a relationship. He has been burnt by a past girlfriend and he is not prepared to fall in love. Emma and Knox have a chemistry that can not be denied and even though they deny they are attracted to each other and try to stay away from each other they are destined to be together. They have a lot of hurdles in their lives, crazy exes, interfering family members, family tragedy and more but they come together for their happy ever after in the end.

This is one of those books you just comfortably slip in to, Emma and Knox are perfect for each other and the secondary characters add to the story not just feel like padding. I have laughed cried got frustrated with Emma and Knox and wanted to slap her mother and sister. I really enjoy Lyssa’s writing , it’s warm and friendly .... sounds odd for writing style I know but once you start reading you’ll understand, the characters feel real , they could be that woman over there in the coffee shop or that guy at the bar, The situations happen, it’s fiction that you could be based on real life relationships... maybe they are!!!!

House Rules

I voluntarily read an arc of this book for a fair and honest review. If you have a mother in law who doesn’t like you this book is perfect for you. It’s like reading the last 40 years of my marriage. She’s still hoping we will divorce. Emma’s mother is diabolical and some of her house rules a really familiar. It’s like Ms. Cole took a photo of my m-I-l’s refrigerator door! What makes no sense is why is a psychiatrist acting like an imbecilic child? Why is following her mother’s rules even an issue? Her decision making skills are questionable and Knox has all but opened a vein for her. This book, at times, borders on silly, and at all times, frustrating. The story get complex, unbelievable and sad. It’s worth the read

Emma has been brought up to believe the strict rules her Mother has brainwashed into her, and after one disaster after another; she begins to question these rules. Knox is a new co-worker, and he breaks every rule that is going. Both of these characters have heartbreaking pasts, and have to work hard to overcome issues in their path. This story is filled with drama, emotional, and is a well developed plot. In my opinion, this is this authors’ best work to date, as this is a beautiful and phenomenal story, and I cannot wait to read more of this authors’ work. Brilliant work Lyssa!!

Lyssa Cole has crafted an intense, drama filled, angsty read that I was sucked into from page one!!

Emma has been brought up and pretty much brainwashed by her erratic, bat$h*t crazy mom!! Her strict rules have been embedded into her brain since as far as she can remember. She knows the rules aren't fitting her life, but she doesn't know any different. Then she meets Knox, and HE BREAKS ALL THE RULES!!! Knox comes with a past as well. Not wanting to date or be involved with women after a really bad break up. Can these two overcome all the obstacles and those "house rules?"

House Rules is an emotional rollercoaster filled with drama, and angst. The characters are well developed and I ADORED Emma and Knox! It's my favorite book to date of Ms Cole's. Can't wait for more from her in the future!!

Wow, Emma's mom gave the term "helicopter mom" a whole new meaning! Emma, a successful therapist, is constantly being harassed by her mother, who has indoctrinated in Emma the ten House Rules. Emma's more than fed up but can't seem to get mom off her back, and her sister is no help either. When she meets the new therapist Knox, she is tempted to throw every Rule out the window, but she's still holding back, unsure and not ready to trust her heart. Knox has already been burned, and though he's a smexy hot guy, he's also not ready to take that leap of faith. Still, he's drawn to Emma in a way that can't be denied, and despite some stumbles along the way, they manage to find the path that was meant to be. I loved Emma and Knox as much as I dreaded her mother. This was a wonderful, drama- and angst-filled story about trusting your own heart and doing as you were meant to do.

This was a great story!! A love story between Knox and Emma.
Emma’s love life could be way better, but she has to abide by her mom’s house rules. She needs these to find the right future husband. Without these rules she is making the wrong choices.
Meanwhile Knox has had a very difficult experience with love. He’s apprehensive to fall in love again. That all changes when he sees Emma on his first day of work. As much as they both feel this shouldn’t happen they can’t deny the chemistry and sparks that they have. I still want to read more on these characters. That’s how you know the book is really GOOD!!
As they say rules are meant to be broken sometimes...
I read this book voluntarily for an honest review.

There is a lot going on in this story. Insta-lust, family dysfunction, hot sex, great friends, successful adults and so much more.

Emma and Knox work in the same practice and have instant chemistry. She has been ingrained by rules to dating since she was a young girl - Knox describes it as being her doctrine for living. Even though Emma is a Ph.D. she still can't get away from the thought that she still had to follow them. This story is her journey as told in a dual POV with lots of action.

This was an enjoyable read that made me swoon at times, cause steam to come out of my ears at times, and felt satisfied by the overall story.
