The mother of Alton Sterling's eldest son, Cameron, blasted the shooting of police officers in Dallas during protests against the officer-involved shootings of Sterling and Philando Castile, calling it "reprehensible," The Advocate reports.

"We wholeheartedly reject the reprehensible acts of violence that were perpetrated against members of the Dallas Police Department," Quinyetta McMillon said in a statement released by her attorney on her behalf. "Our hearts break for the families of the officers who were lost as they protected protesters and residents alike during a rally."

Sterling was killed during an altercation with Baton Rouge, La., police officers early Tuesday morning. Less than 48 hours later, in Falcon Heights, Minn., another officer fatally shot Castile during what should have been a routine traffic stop.

"Regardless of how angry or upset people may be, resorting to this kind of sickening violence should never happen and simply cannot be tolerated," the statement continued. Referring to police officers, it also acknowledged that "the vast majority conduct themselves honorably as they protect and serve our communities."
