I live in the South where the heat and humidity have driven us all slightly mad. I'm easy to spot as I'm the palest person around. I avoid the sun and love air conditioned comfort. On the plus side, my skin will never look like badly laid roofing shingles.

My favorite writing genres are fantasy, romance, and science fiction, but I'll read just about anything except technical instruction manuals. All my stories have humor and a touch of sass. In my spare time I enjoy phoning in Bigfoot sightings to the Department of Fish and Wildlife. They are heartily sick of hearing from me.

Second Chance City combines elements from different literary genres to create a delightful read filled with great characters and fun plot twists. It effectively mixes fantasy, romance and mystery to appeal to a very wide audience. While I personally do not gravitate toward fantasy or romance books I find that L. A. Kelley is able to incorporate these elements in a way that is not overwhelming in any one area (i.e. not overwhelmingly fantastical or sexual). It is a relatively quick read but the characters and plot line are well developed. I have read her two previous books, and I feel like all three are unique and enjoyable. L. A. Kelley's books never disappoint!

Who hasn't envisioned of waking up in a book? This is one of those books that makes you think after you have read it, as well is a great coffee table talker. It is for sure one of my favorite reads for this year. The two main characters, Nate and Libby, arrive in a popular comic series. Adventures for the two main characters are based from similar parallel universe destinations to their known city in some ways, others vastly different. This is a great adventure story!

Thanks to NetGalley, L.A. Kelley and Wild Rose Press for free access to "Second Chance City". In my return this is my honest review.

"Second Chance City" is a novel that's both a spoof of and homage to comic books. The story is set in Coldwater Bay, the two main characters are Nate Hammond and Elisabeth (Libby) Parrish. Libby's boss is in town to do an event. Small town cop, Nate Hammond, and his former child friend, Libby Parrish join together to track down the evil comic book villain Scribe. That wasn't their intention but their unintended adventure starts when Nate and Libby realize that Libby's boss is missing and they search for him. They go to the book store where Libby's boss, comic book author Payton Debolt, did a signing that same day. While there they get sucked into a different dimension and go to a mirror city of Coldwater Bay, called Second Chance City.

The two cities have a lot in common including pretty much the same cast of characters. Although basically the same characters, the characters aren't the same. First of all Second Chance City is set in a comic book world. There are superheroes and super villians, even on entering this dimension Libby (Mighty Light) and Nate (Good Citizen) have superhero powers. We follow the two heroes through their adventures as they head to a predictable finale. Theirs is a classic romantic storyline of will they or won't they when clearly we can see they'll be getting together. That's was so predictable and telegraphed that I hoped something was going to happen to change what seemed so inevitable. Did it? Well I guess you'll have to read the book to find out.

Bad things about this novel is that it's simplistic, predictable and the end works out way too perfectly. In a world of superheroes and super villains, not so many people should make it out alive as do in this novel.

Good things it's decent quality, has some funny moments, has a heart and it makes fun of some comic book tropes. It's also not very long and I read through it quickly. There wasn't a long drawn out story line, it was perfectly compact. It doesn't over explain things, but you're also not left in the dark.

I know some of my criticism can come off as being harsh, but honestly I enjoyed this book. It's not a complex novel that will challenge your intelligience. But it also won't bore you. You'll like the characters, the story, the humor and the twists and turns. Yes, I said it was predictable, but there are also some satisfying twists and turns.

Would I recommend that you read this book? Why yes I would!! But I suggest you read it knowing that it has weaknesses. But those weaknesses won't prevent you from enjoying it. Don't over think it and just read for the enjoyment of reading a fun novel.

Sometimes life gives you an unexpected second chance at happiness. In this cute novel, Nate's second chance comes in the form of an interdimensional gateway that transports him and his childhood crush, Libby, to Second Chance City, the world depicted in the Refractor comics. Oddly enough, Second Chance City bears a strong resemblance to Coldwater Bay in both its buildings and residents- with one big difference. Superheroes and supervillians exist.

Second Chance City is a dangerous place, particularly for strangers. After foiling a robbery by a pair of supervillians, Nate and Libby are seen as mysterious new heroes. As supervillians exist, so too must Refractor and his allies, and they may know how to transport Nate and Libby home. The problem is that Refractor is missing. Can an ordinary cop and an aspiring artist/administrative assistant find a way to return home unscathed? Is this the second chance that Nate needs to build a closer relationship with Libby? Will their knowledge of the real world help save Second Chance City?

Second Chance City is a sweet, fun adventure with a dose of romance. Comic and sci fi tropes abound. The biggest threat to Nate and Libby comes from romantic angst. Although there are a few sexual references, there is nothing explicit or graphic. This short sci fi romance is a fun read, and the comic book references are sure to bring a smile. Happy endings are guaranteed.

I received a copy of Second Chance City from the publisher and netgalley.com in exchange for an honest review.

Second Chance City is a delightful read. I found myself recalling Simon R Green's the Nightside series partially from the hidden world/parallel dimension trope but also due to the characters' banter. It is far sweeter and more innocent than the Nightside, as is appropriate for a novel dealing with comic book tropes. I won't say more since it might ruin some of the lovely and well written plot twists. I really enjoyed the novel, to the point that I was disappointed when having to set it down and deal with the real world.

Please note that although I received a copy of this book in exchange for a review, I didn't have to say anything nice about it and was not pressured to leave a good review.
