With today’s social media marketing, it is easier than ever to post a picture of your daily special in your restaurant or a popular product from your bakery case. It is quick and convenient to snap a photo with your smartphone or tablet that you can quickly upload to Facebook or Instagram, but you still want to be sure you produce a quality image that conveys the right message to your audience. Remember, a bad photo can do more harm than good.

Here are three tips for quality smartphone photos:

Focus on the Lighting and Composition: Just like with a regular camera, lighting and composition are two key components of a good photo. Natural light always results in a better image, particularly with a smartphone that doesn’t have a high-powered flash. Consider where the sun enters your building and when and then time your shoots accordingly. Harsh sun can create an overexposed image that makes you loose details, so you might want to consider placing your product in a soft, natural light. Don’t be afraid to move the product around to different locations until you find the best light.

Get Close: Close ups of your products can help you capture detail that make your image stand out, so get close to the product and take several different shots. Using different angles and different distances until you find the perfect shot.

Don’t Go Overboard: One word of caution—there are several editing tools and filters you can use on your smartphones, but several filters can change the appearance of food and make it look less vibrant and appetizing.
