As perhaps the most famous 'cleaner' or 'maid' of them all, with two ugly step-sisters and a wicked step-mother, Cinderella certainly had her fair share of heartache.

But - as far as we're aware - she never had to deal with poisonous spiders lurking, or got up to work one morning, only to be greeted by a dead body.

Whether you're a taxi driver, policeman, backing-singer or flight attendant, each job comes with it's own challenges, highs, lows, occupational hazards - and intriguing confessions.

As a cleaner, there's a certain amount of insight you get into other people's lives - often whether you like it or not.

Just ask these Redditors, who've either worked as cleaners, housekeepers or maids, and have seen it all.

1. Saving water

One former housekeeper at a hotel, deserat, had one very environmentally aware guest.

"We had this guy that lived there, he was disgusting. He would only let us clean his room about once a month, that was also when his bath water got changed.

The bath water probably wasn't this clean (

"That's right, he used the same bath water for a solid month, every month. Thought it was completely normal and sanitary."

2. A picture is worth a thousand words

When cleaning the home of an Olympic gold medallist, Vespa_Lonestarr came across some interesting artwork.

"I used to clean this one house. The owner had a larger-than-life fully nude portrait of himself and his wife in the bedroom, mounted above the bed.

"It was over 10 feet tall, six feet wide and rather, ahem, detailed.

3. This chilling tale

Another former housekeeper, Throwawaychica encountered something VERY unsettling.

"This couple had a couple of young kids, under the age of five.

"The doorknob of bathroom next to the kid's room was installed backwards. The locking part was on the outside.

"At first I thought perhaps they did that to keep the kids from accidentally locking it, but while cleaning under the sink, I saw they kept a rolled up blanket and snacks.

"I can only assume the kids stayed locked in there for some length of time."

4. Occupational hazard

Laugh_Always' aunt had to say goodbye to one client.

"My aunt used to be a cleaner for an elderly lady in particular.

"My aunt walked in to the bathroom and found the old lady had passed away in the bath. I believe my aunt quit after that."

5. "It always made me a bit sad"

Other confessions, like the one from another anonymous user were more poignant than anything else.

"When I was a teenager, I worked as a housekeeper in a hotel one summer.

"We would sometimes find wedding rings tucked between the mattresses or in the drawers of bedside tables. It always made me a bit sad."

Some stories were very poignant (

6. Another occupational hazard

Working as a cleaner in Australia comes with different, eight-legged down-sides, as another anonymous user explains.

"I've found a pretty large amount of venomous spiders in places people wouldn't think of.

Can you imagine having to deal with big, poisonous spiders on a daily basis? (

"Redbacks were probably the most common; worst one was probably a white-tail spider (incredibly unpleasant flesh-eating venom) under the latch of someone's dishwasher.

"I also found a huge huntsman and a hornet of some kind tangled up together (dead), forever locked in mortal combat."

7. The walls have eyes. And wings. And stings.

Another example of nature winning comes courtesy of Inu1989.

" My mother cleans houses in order to sell them on market.

"One of the houses seemed to have a bee problem, but after some investigating her team could not find any nests.

"Well, they noticed that the walls seemed to be buzzing .

"They knocked down the wall and were greeted with a wall of living, breathing yellow mass of bees. Most of the house was a giant hive. Even the walls were covered in a thick layer of honey.

"So, in the end, most of the house ended up begin demolished."
