Could Tom Hiddleston take up a starring role in Sherlock series 4 as the "other" member of the Holmes family?

Tom sent tongues wagging when he was seen posing for pictures at the San Diego Comic Con with Sherlock stars Mark Gatiss and Amanda Abbington.

Co-creator Mark (who plays Sherlock's brother Mycroft) tweeted a pic of the three of them, captioned: "blud".

Fans inevitably went into meltdown, with one Twitter user writing: "I swear to god, I will freak if it turns out that Tom Hiddleston's been cast as the 3rd brother. Please God, make this happen," while another said: "Does Tom play the long lost Holmes brother? "

It comes after the the Sherlock panel at San Diego Comic-Con gave us three names as clues to the events of series four – Thatcher, Smith and Sherrinford.

Sherrinford Holmes is a hypothetical elder brother of Sherlock Holmes and Mycroft Holmes.

Sherlock's third series finale hinted at the introduction of a third Holmes sibling, with Mycroft's line: "I'm not given to outbursts of brotherly compassion. You know what happened to the other one."

And given that Steven Moffat and Mark Gatiss are huge Conan Doyle buffs, they'll know the significance of the 'Sherrinford' name.

Sherlock series four will air in 2017.
